The washing method of cleaning fabrics with water as a medium is called washing. When cleaning clothes in this way, due to the difference in the type and structure of the clothes, it will lead to some poor washing quality. For example, natural fibers tend to swell after absorbing water, and shrink after drying, resulting in shrinkage and deformation of clothing; the effect of water on wool products will cause the surface scales to be felted and shrink. In addition, washing will also cause pilling of wool fabrics that make fabrics out of shape, and make wool and silk fade and lose the luster. These disadvantages can be overcome if this type of fabrics are washed in the proper dry cleaning method.
Dry cleaning is a dry-in-dry-out method of washing clothes with organic chemical solvents, including removing oil or other stains. Since the water does not directly contact the clothes during the washing process, it is called dry cleaning.
During dry cleaning, cleaning oil or grease-based soils is an easy task, because oil or grease is easily soluble in organic solvents. As dry cleaning solvents do not swell natural or wool fabrics and form fiber shrinkage when cleaning fabrics, all dry-cleaned fabrics do not produce significant wrinkling and appearance changes.
The organic solvent for dry cleaning must rely on the action of water to remove water-soluble dirt, but only a very small amount of water can be dissolved in the dry cleaning solvent. This trace amount of water cannot reach the concentration of washing away water-soluble dirt at all. However, in order to achieve a certain concentration of water in the dry cleaning solvent, adding an appropriate amount of surfactant to the dry cleaning solvent can increase the amount of water present in the dry cleaning solvent to form the desired optimal cleaning micelle state.
Dry cleaning is a relatively "gentle" washing method for fabrics. Due to the characteristics of dry cleaning, as long as the technology is properly handled, the washed fabrics (except individual ones) can achieve the excellent effects of not easy to deform and fade, and prolong the service life after washing.
