①What is panthenol?
Panthenol was first used in 1944 and is a derivative of vitamin B5, also known as vitamin pro-B5, which is the precursor of vitamin B5 pantothenic acid. Since vitamin B5 is unstable in nature and is easily affected by temperature and formulation to reduce bioavailability, its precursor, panthenol, is generally used in cosmetic and toiletries formulations. Panthenol is more stable, has better penetration power, easily penetrates the skin barrier and can effectively penetrate into the stratum corneum. Due to its high cost, this ingredient is mostly used in cosmetics, mainly for its moisturizing, soothing and restorative effects.
②Mechanism of panthenol
Panthenol is converted to pantothenic acid after being utilized by skin tissues, and pantothenic acid is the most important raw material for synthesizing coenzyme A. It can promote the metabolism of proteins, fats and sugars required by animals, protect skin and mucous membranes, and improve hair color and luster, etc. It can enhance the moisturizing effect of products, soothe dry skin as well as enhance skin hydration, and also has certain anti-inflammatory and repairing effects.
